Year 7 Local Government Excursion

As part the Geography Unit: Living in Litchfield, 7D visited the Litchfield Council offices to hear about the responsibilities of local Government and the role our region plays in the Northern Territory.

The first part of our excursion was a spot of lunch at Coolalinga Central and some fieldwork about the new local shopping plaza.

Many thanks to Litchfield Council for the tremendous effort they made to inform students in an engaging way, the role of local government and the Litchfield Municipality.

When we arrived, the students were invited to sit in the Council Chambers. The Litchfield Council staff and Madam Mayor, Maree Bredhauer, presented an informative and interesting overview of Council responsibility and how this works within the three levels of government. The students were shown how rates are spent and found out how the Litchfield Municipality has changed, as a community, over the last ten years.

The students were particularly surprised at the high cost of sealing roads and how many kilometres of road Council has to maintain each year. A big shock to every-one was the ongoing cost of replacing street signage, which runs into hundreds for each sign damaged.

Students were also given an overview on responsible dog ownership and how animal management works. The main messages were; micro-chip your pets so they can be located easily and think about what they are up to while every-one is out at work or school.

Some interesting statistics:
  • Litchfield has population of 25 000+ and experienced 50% growth in past 10 years.
  • 15% of all NT business, over 2075 small to medium sized businesses are located in Litchfield.
  • The Litchfield Mango Industry is worth $70 million to NT economy.
  • Litchfield maintains 600Km of roads – $20 million to seal 15 km of road.

To conclude, the students were treated to afternoon refreshments and left with a real respect for what Council does and what we can do to make Litchfield a top place to live in.
