SUBJECT: Ceramics

In Year 10 Ceramics, students begin to explore their own style and techniques in ceramics and pottery. Students begin throwing on the wheel and exploring ways of creating sculpture, art and usable pottery. Students look at how Ceramics has changed over time and experiment with historical techniques to create new contemporary pieces.

In Year 10 Child Studies, students investigate child related issues relating to the family, development of the child and the vital role played by the parents and caregivers. Students will gain a knowledge and understanding of the physical, intellectual, social and emotional development of the child.

SUBJECT: Art

In Year 10 Art, students explore concept development in their art practices and develop works that they are passionate about. Students investigate artworks and displays from different cultures, times and places, identifying the influences of other artists on their own art making. Students develop and refine their creative arts process, reflecting on their learning in their visual diaries. Student deepen their skill set in Watercolour painting and Printmaking.

All Day Art

Media Arts

In Year 10 Media Arts students will be introduced to the creative possibilities of media arts. Students will learn about film and screen, design and photography skills. Skills that will be introduced include using a DSLR to capture still and moving imagery as well as being introduced to postproduction editing software.

SUBJECT: Year 10/11 Musical (Stage 1 Integrated Learning)

In Stage 1 Musical, students explore the genre of Musical Theatre and associated Dance, Drama, Music and Technical application and performance. Learning experiences focus on collaboration to create a Musical Theatre performance for a public audience. In theory lessons, students reflect on the collaborative process and research and conduct skills assessments.

SUBJECT: Food & Hospitality

In Year 10 Food and Hospitality, students develop knowledge and understanding of cooking skills and techniques used in a different cuisines as well as focusing on food safety and hygiene. Students demonstrate use of specialised equipment to reach specified standards of quality and safety.

In Year 10, English splits into three streams: Advanced, Curriculum and Literacy, this enables students to work at their level and prepare for the appropriate level of Stage 1 & 2 English courses.

Courses

Advanced English

Explore topics and genres that encourage students to think creatively and analytically across many texts. Students explore the evolution of the English language in the form of film, novel, and poetry extracts to develop skills and allow for individual scope.

Further Study: Students achieving success in Advanced English will be well prepared for Stage 1 Pre-Literary English.

Curriculum

Students study multiple text types, enabling them to explore and understand the evolution of the English language through film, novel and poetry extracts. Students are encouraged to develop their ability to communicate ideas with multiple options that allow scope for individual success.

Further Study: Students achieving success in Curriculum English will be well prepared for Stage 1 English.

Literacy

Students are exposed to multiple text-types, enabling them to explore and understand key elements of structure and genre. Students develop their ability to communicate ideas across multiple platforms to allow student success.

All students will undertake one semester of History in year 10, and they get to choose either Geography OR Business OR Legal for one semester.

Courses: History

Students develop their knowledge, understanding and inquiry skills through the study of the modern world, with an emphasis on Australia in its global context during the 20th century. Students investigate social, cultural, economic and political developments through depth studies of World War II and Building Modern Australia.

Further study: Stage 1 Modern History

Courses: Business

Students develop a foundational understanding of economics and business ideas. Using real-world case studies students investigate and apply core business concepts. Students explore the factors that influence business decisions, examine the consequences of decisions, and develop a business pitch.

Further Study: Stage 1 Business & Tourism

Courses: Legal Studies

Students develop a foundational understanding of the nature of the legal system. Using real-world case studies students investigate and apply core legal concepts. Students explore aspects of how laws are made, aspects of the criminal justice system, and international legal processes.

Courses: Geography

Students develop their knowledge and understanding in the units of Environmental Change and Management and Geographies of Wellbeing. They investigate the concept of climate change and sustainability by exploring the impacts of human societies on a global scale and undertake fieldwork to critique environmental management on a local level. Wellbeing is examined by studying the effects of improved global living standards and the impacts that conflict, past or current, has had on a selected country or region.

Further Study:Students successfully completing Year 10 Geography will be well prepared for Stage 1 Geography.

SUBJECT: Personal Learning Plan

In Personal Learning Plan (PLP) students have the opportunity to explore how to develop, implement, review and adjust personal learning goals and choices to prepare for their education, future career and life pathways.

PLP is a compulsory element of the NTCET and is a Stage 1 subject.

PLP is often students’ first exposure to SACE subjects, it is important that students understand the rules and guidelines associated with SACE subjects. The Senior Schools Assessment Policy will be strictly enforced.

SUBJECT: Health and Physical Education

Students propose and evaluate personal strategies to manage their identities, emotions and responses to change. They synthesise health information from credible sources to propose and justify strategies to enhance their own and others’ health, safety, relationships, and wellbeing. Students evaluate and refine their own and others’ movement skills and performances and apply movement concepts in challenging or unfamiliar situations. Students propose and evaluate community-based physical activity interventions designed to improve the health, fitness and wellbeing of themselves and others. They apply and evaluate leadership approaches, collaboration strategies and ethical behaviours across a range of movement contexts.

Further Study: Students successfully completing Year 10 Physical Education will be well prepared for Stage 1 Physical Education and Stage 1 Health & Wellbeing.

SUBJECT: Sports Academy

In Year 10, Taminmin offers opportunities for the talented and enthusiastic athletes to further progress their skills in our various Sports Academy programs.

10 Sports Academy-AFL (male only) 

Students learn to apply more specialised movement skills and complex movement strategies in Australian Football Rules. Students gain an understanding of human functioning and physical activity in Australian Rules Football with an awareness of the community structures and practices that influence participation in physical activity. Students explore their own physical capacities and analyse performance, health, and lifestyle issues. They develop skills in communication, investigation, and the ability to apply knowledge to Australian Football Rules practical situations.

10 Sports Academy-Basketball

Students gain an understanding of the biomechanics, skills and physical activity in Basketball. Students explore and improve their own physical capacities and analyse performance, health, and lifestyle issues. They develop skills in communication and leadership as well as the ability to apply knowledge to practical situations. Students propose and evaluate interventions to improve fitness and physical activity levels in their communities.

10 Sports Academy-Rugby (male only) 

Students learn to apply more specialised movement skills and complex movement strategies in Rugby League. They also explore movement concepts and strategies to evaluate and refine their own and others movement performances in the Eels Cup training sessions. The curriculum provides opportunities for students to refine and consolidate personal and social skills in demonstrating leadership, teamwork and collaboration in a range of Rugby League skills and drills. Students explore and investigate future career paths and opportunities available outside of professional sport.

10 Sports Academy-Female 

Students learn to apply more specialised movement skills and complex movement strategies in AFL (Australian Football League) and NRL (National Rugby League). Students gain an understanding of human functioning and physical activity in both sports. They learn with an awareness of the sporting communities structures and practices that influence participation in physical activity. Students explore their own physical capacities and analyse performance, health, and lifestyle issues. They develop skills in communication, investigation, and the ability to apply knowledge to AFL and NRL practical situations.

SUBJECT: Fitness - Currently Unavailable

Students propose and evaluate interventions to improve fitness and physical activity levels and apply decision-making and problem-solving skills when taking action to enhance their own and others’ health, safety and wellbeing. Students are introduced to a range of devices aimed at tracking and improving performance. Students examine their own performance and implement strategies to increase their skills, knowledge and physical performance.

SUBJECT: Mathematics

In Year 10, Mathematics splits into three streams: Advanced, Curriculum and Numeracy, this enables students to work at their level and prepare for the appropriate level of Stage 1 & 2 Mathematics courses.

Advanced Mathematics

This course follows the Australian Curriculum for Mathematics and is extended with additional content to prepare for high level Mathematics in Stage 1 & 2. This course focuses on students’ ability to understand and manipulate algebraically, and develops their ability to apply these skills to contextualised problems.

Further Study: Students achieving a B grade or better will be well prepared for Stage 1 Mathematics Pre-Methods and Pre-Specialist courses.

SUBJECT: Agriculture

In Year 10 Agriculture students examine the management of various agricultural industries and enterprises, giving students the opportunity to further their knowledge of animal behaviour and welfare, as well as technological innovations supporting the agriculture industry. There will be a focus on understanding the legal requirements for producers to reduce the risks of spreading infectious diseases and introduced species and the challenges of feeding the world in a changing environment.

SUBJECT: Science

In Year 10, Science splits into three streams: Advanced, Curriculum and Integrated, this enables students to work at their level and prepare for the appropriate level of Stage 1 & 2 Science courses.

Advanced Science

This course follows the Australian Curriculum for Science and is extended with additional content to prepare for high level Science in Stage 1 & 2. This course focuses on students’ ability to think critically using scientific understanding.

 

Further Study: Students successfully completing Year 10 Advance Science will be well prepared for Stage 1 Science courses.

 

Curriculum Science

This course follows the Australian Curriculum for Science and gives a solid grounding in scientific processes and skills.

Further Study: Students achieving a B grade or better will be well prepared for Stage 1 Science courses.

 

Integrated Science

This subject allows students to approach science in a more applied manner with the addition of the opportunity to receive 10 credits per semester towards their NTCET completion.

Further Study: Students who do Integrated Science generally do not intend on continuing onto Stage 1 and 2 Science subjects.

SUBJECT: STEM Innovations Academy

The program aims to connect schools with industry, develop students’ understanding of Engineering and STEM related jobs and the pathways that lead to them. Students will be focused on developing their own capabilities while working in small groups to design a solution to an NT Rural Problem. Students will follow an Engineering Design Process to assist them to design and re-design and finally present their solution. They will be required to reflect on this process and the development of their general capabilities.

SUBJECT: STEM

Students focus on STEM and design skills to assist them in completing a series of projects which ultimately lead to a larger long-term project of their own design. Students will work on their collaboration, project management and critical and creative thinking skills. Projects throughout the course will include: furniture making, use of drone technology and basic mechanics using Go-Karts. This subject is run as a Stage 1 Integrated Learning which contributes to the NTCET completion.
